Day 5: May 2022
According to my photo roll, I didn’t really cook much this past May. I don’t know what I was up to. A lot of pottery, that’s for sure, but what on earth was I cooking? And what was the best thing I cooked? I don’t know, honestly. But I do know that, in late May, Theo’s school celebrated the Queen’s Jubliee. 👸
Kids were meant to go in with a “festive party plate” and dress like royalty. Theo wore his pjs, “dressing gown” and a crown (Google “Prince George meets Obama” and you’ll see where I’m coming from….), and I sent him with a Union Jack-inspired goat cheese tart, hummus, blue tortilla chips and some red and blue fruits. 🇬🇧
Was it delicious? Probably…? 🙃Was it memorable? 💯…because the day before was the Uvalde elementary school shooting. And, while every parent I know was sick to their stomach over it, my friends in America were nervously sending their kids to school, worried for their actual lives…and my kid was celebrating and eating a flag-shaped tart and dressed like a prince. The difference was stark and terrifying.
I miss America. I do, so very much. But I am beyond grateful to be raising Theodore in a country where I don’t have to worry about him being gunned down at school. Or at a movie theater. Or grocery store. Or church. Or…Or…Or…
